You had your chance.
You could’ve listened to the roughly 70% of your own membership that favors universal background checks. Every gun, every sale.
You could’ve taken a page from the playbook of the auto industry — who, at first resisted safety measures like airbags and, you know, more steel… and who are now tripping over themselves to be deemed ‘safest’.
You could’ve had a compassionate voice at time of national tragedy… instead of doubling down with your obtuse, willfully-naive ‘good guy stops bad guy’ nonsense. As if the whole of the gun violence problem comes down to ‘heroes’ and ‘thugs’. (And, yeah, we all know what you mean when you say ‘thugs’… cat's out of the bag on that one.)
You could’ve found places for agreement instead of seeing the world through your slippery slope lens. Acknowledging that, yes, it should be harder for three year olds to access unsecured guns and shoot themselves in the face is not — in fact — the thing that happens just before Obama comes a-knockin’.
You could’ve admitted that we have a uniquely American problem — one that won’t be solved by adding to the over 300 million guns already in circulation. The math just doesn’t add up.
But you didn’t do any of these things. You spent millions upon millions of dollars to make it as easy as possible for anyone — anyone — to get a gun.
Including the perpetrator of the largest mass shooting in US history. So far.
And even now, you’re making this about Islamic terrorism… completely ignoring that the shooter was an American citizen. You lobbied hard so that this citizen could have easy access to that weapon of mass destruction. Which begs the question, who’s the real terrorist here?
But, yep, that’s where we are now. You went and pissed off the gays. People who wanted nothing more than to live their lives, love who they want and have brunch are now going to line up against you… just like an army of fed-up suburban moms did in the days after Sandy Hook.
I don’t know if you watch TV or read the paper or anything down there at your (gun-free) Fairfax HQ, but these people know how to get shit done.
Remember back around 2008 when there was serious talk about a Constitutional amendment defining marriage as being only between a man and a woman? Well, fast forward 7 short years and same sex marriage is the law of the land.
Put another way, sucks to be you right now.
You had your chance.
